The graves of Alsoor
Someone is stealing the dead. In Alsoor, graves have become the beginning of an investigation. The Church of Tal follows the traffic in corpses to an estate east of the city. Its owner, Tormod, is a minor noble protected by undead servants.
The mob and the crypt
The inquisitors encourage a peasant mob to storm his property. Within hours, Tormod hangs from a tree. His relatives inherit the estate and bury him in the crypt his servants built. The authorities have killed the man they believe responsible, but that does not end the thefts.
The empty coffin
Months later, bodies begin disappearing again. The authorities return to the estate and find it abandoned. They enter the crypt and open Tormod's coffin. It is empty.
Scarwood and the hunters
Beyond Alsoor, fear has made protection uncertain. Scarwood's people welcome those who stand against demons, even when their protectors are themselves unsettling. Exorcists and hunters confront dangers ordinary people cannot easily resist. The thefts at Tormod's estate have left another danger unanswered: the noble's death did not keep the dead in their graves, and his own body has vanished too.
