An inherited winter
Generations after Urza and Mishra's war, Dominaria still lives with the consequences of the sylex. Ice covers Terisiare. Its peoples defend borders, gather what they can, and try to survive the endless winter.
Kjeldor and Balduvia
Kjeldor's knights and military orders hold the kingdom's ground. Beyond its borders, Balduvian warriors and mages defend a different people. Kjeldor treats its neighbors as barbarians and raiders. The hostility between them sustains a conflict neither can easily abandon.
Lim-Dul and the dead
Lim-Dul turns those losses into power. His legions advance with the bodies of the fallen. Among the undead, defenders recognize people they once knew and loved. The necromancer uses those dead against the living, and every conflict supplies his army with more soldiers.
The demands of Leshrac
He exploits the divisions between Kjeldor and Balduvia, but he has a master of his own. Leshrac demands his service. The necromancer's army belongs to a contest reaching beyond the neighboring peoples and beyond Dominaria itself.
Jodah's long life
Jodah has survived centuries. As a young man fleeing goblins, he hid in a fountain without knowing it was a fountain of youth. The accident gave him extraordinary longevity. His long life has left him with a burden of memory, and the mirror associated with him helps preserve his mind.
A captive without a past
Now Jodah is in Lim-Dul's power, confused and separated from his memories. The necromancer convinces him he was summoned for research and that his continued existence depends on obedience. Jodah is not a resurrected corpse. His captor's deception works because his memory is damaged and Lim-Dul controls what he can learn.
The isolated Shard
Lim-Dul wants answers about a wandering plane and the possibility of killing a planeswalker. Dominaria belongs to the Shard, a group of twelve planes isolated from the wider Multiverse. Shandalar's passage offers a possible route out of that confinement. Jodah's knowledge is something the necromancer intends to use.
Jaya's rescue
Outside, winter continues, and the wars continue supplying bodies. Jaya Ballard, a mage for hire, brings fire and a way out. She helps rescue Jodah from the necromancer's influence, and Freyalise participates in his recovery. The archmage begins regaining the ability to act for himself.
The living need an alliance
No longer confined to answering Lim-Dul's questions, Jodah can work against the army threatening Terisiare. But escape and recovery do not resolve the divisions feeding it. Jodah and Jaya must help turn Kjeldor and Balduvia toward cooperation. If the living continue fighting one another, their dead will keep strengthening the same enemy.
