The Apocalypse Chime
Planeswalkers once fought across Ulgrotha. Their wars damaged its cities and the mana on which magic and life depended. At the end of those wars, Ravi sounded the Apocalypse Chime. Its devastation left the plane with a diminished supply of mana.
Ravi and Grandmother Sengir
Ravi would later be known as Grandmother Sengir. The woman responsible for that catastrophe became part of Baron Sengir's household, carrying the plane's violent past into the vampire's castle.
Feroz and Serra
For a time, Ulgrotha had defenders. Feroz and Serra brought protection to the damaged plane. Feroz's Ban restricted the arrival of outsiders, limiting the danger of another planeswalker's ambitions becoming a catastrophe for everyone living there.
The fading Ban
But Feroz died, and Serra eventually left Ulgrotha. The protection he established began to fade. The people who depended on it had to continue without the same shield against outsiders.
Baron Sengir's household
Baron Sengir's influence extends beyond his castle. His vampire household spreads fear through the surrounding country. Its members include Grandmother Sengir, whose history reaches further back than the family's immediate struggles. The baron's long life and power allow the household to wait while its neighbors age.
The other peoples of Ulgrotha
Ulgrotha also contains communities outside that household's complete control. Aysen, the Anaba, and the settlements around An-Havva preserve their own ways of life. They endure in a world still marked by catastrophe and fading protection.
Autumn Willow
Autumn Willow's connection to the forest represents another power on the plane. The life gathered around her does not follow the vampire family's organization. The castle, the forest, and the other communities belong to the same damaged world without sharing one ruler or one purpose.
The unknown portal
A dwarven portal is associated with Castle Sengir, but its destination has not been firmly identified. Ulgrotha has already suffered from visitors entering its world. The unknown passage remains part of the danger surrounding a household whose power the fading Ban can no longer hold at a distance.
