Read the story

Before dawn

At dawn, a storyteller may lose her life. Scheherazade answers that danger with a story whose ending must wait. Curiosity buys another night. This is the literary doorway into Arabian Nights, Magic's first expansion. Its inspiration is One Thousand and One Nights; we are entering that frame, not claiming that every card records one continuous Magic adventure.

A new horizon

December, nineteen ninety-three. Richard Garfield takes Magic beyond Alpha into tales of travelers, hidden treasure, and dangerous wonders. The City of Brass offers a dazzling horizon. Aladdin's Lamp promises a power that ordinary life cannot supply. These are separate invitations to imagine, rather than consecutive scenes from a single campaign.

The lamp and the door

Aladdin and Ali Baba bring familiar names into the game. In the literary stories, a lamp can overturn a life, while a hidden entrance leads toward treasure and danger. The paintings give those names a presence. Their appearance together in an expansion does not make them companions on a shared quest. Each opens a different door.

Beyond the shore

Sindbad carries the promise of travel: another shore, another marvel, another chance never to return. The sea makes the known world feel small. This set can suggest an enormous journey through a handful of pictures because each picture leaves something beyond its edge. The atmosphere belongs to the tales that inspired it; a complete voyage is not narrated by these cards.

The price of power

Then the djinn change the mood. Juzam Djinn gives its controller strength at a cost, a mechanical bargain that invites an old question: what will you surrender for power? Erhnam Djinn offers another imposing presence. We can read that tension in the game without inventing motives or speeches for its creatures. A wonder can be tempting and threatening at once.

A story left open

Magic would later develop Rabiah as a setting. That later history deserves to be distinguished from the literary inspiration of the nineteen ninety-three expansion. Here, our journey ends where it began: with a story that makes its listener want another night. Beyond the city, there are still roads to follow. This is Multiverse Archive. Next comes Antiquities, and a war whose remains outlive its victors.
